The former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday at Abuja. Goodluck Jonathan who has been away from the country as ECOWAS Special Envoy to Mali to help restore peace to the country, rocked by protests against president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Dr. Jonathan on his visit to Aso Rock reported to President Buhari on his mission to Mali. Goodluck visited Buhari in the company of the President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Jean Claude Kassi Brou. 

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said in his statement that Dr. Jonathan also expressed his gratitude to the President for naming Itakpe - Warri railway complex after him. 

According to Adesina President Buhari thanked him for his mission and said he would meet with the other ECOWAS leaders in order to resolve the problem in Mali.


“We will ask the President of Niger, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS to brief us as a group, and we will then know the way forward,” President Buhari said. He also thanked the former president for his comprehensive briefing. Dr. Jonathan also thanked the president for making his presidential jet available for them to use.

Mali current crisis erupted when the court nullified the results of 31 parliamentary election and  awarded victory to some other candidates which the resistance group claimed it was at the directive President Boubacar Keita. This has led to protesters to call for the resignation of the President.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan said, “ECOWAS can’t preside over the removal of an elected President. Not even the African Union (AU), or the United Nations (UN) can do it."
