Knocks, anger as Akpabio denies claim against RepsNigeria — The ...

The Minister for Niger Delta, Mr. Godswill Akpabio has named the lawmakers that were awarded contract in Niger Delta Commission. Akpabio sent the letter to the National Assembly and copied the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Akpabio had on Monday, while appearing before the House Committee on the NDDC during an investigative hearing on the alleged illegal spending and mismanagement of funds, claimed that the commission awarded members of the National Assembly 60 percent of contracts.

Akpabio named Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs,  (Delta-North), with 53 projects, which included emergency repairs of Asue Street, Owa Phase 2; ldumuogbe Road via Ojemaye; Otolokpo College Road, Otolokpo; and the Police lshu Ani Ukwu Road, Issele Uku.
The document also named Mr Nicholas Mutu, former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on the NDDC,  who represents the Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency of Delta State, is among those linked by the minister with contracts. Mutu's name was listed against 74 projects, including various emergency road projects in Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

Other lawmakers that Akpabio listed projects against are Senator Matthew Urhoghide (Edo-South), six; James Manager (Delta-South), six; Samuel Anyanwu (Imo-West, 8th Senate), 19; and others simply identified as Ondo and Edo Reps.

It was also noticed that the documents was silent on the amounts of the contract awarded. Akpabio last week alleged that 60 percent of the contracts was awarded to members of the National Assembly but this was not evident on the document the minister sent to the National Assembly.

The document also made mention of that the 2 chairmen of the both Houses  Committee on Niger Delta always use undue influence on NDDC to appropriate funds to selected projects. He gave instance of the 2019 budget that the Executive Director of projects alleged that Hon. Tunji-Ojo gave list of 19 projects amounting to N9 billion after tax that the Interim Management Committee of NDDC must pay before the 2019 budget details could be released to the commission.
