Today in Nigeria's History



On 12/12/91 the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos to Abuja. It was General Ibrahim Babangida Nigeria's president from 1985 to 1993 that formally moved the seat of power.

           Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex (c. 1485 – 28 July 1540), was an English lawyer and statesman who served as chief minister to King Henry VIII of England from 1532 to 1540. Cromwell was one of the strongest advocates of the English Reformation. He helped to engineer an annulment of the king's marriage to the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon, in order to allow Henry to marry his mistress Anne Boleyn. After failure to obtain approval from the Pope, in 1534 parliament endorsed the king's claim to be head of a breakaway Church of England, and Cromwell supervised the new church from the unique posts of vicegerent in spirituals and vicar general. During his rise, Cromwell made many enemies, especially among the conservative faction at court. He fell from power after arranging the king's marriage to a German princess, Anna of Cleves. John Robert Lewis: A Colossus of US Civil Rights is Dead

John Robert Lewis, US civil rights legend, congress man has died aged 80. He died of pancreatic cancer. He was the last of the "Big 6" to die. He was a follower and colleague of Martin Luther King Jr. Lewis was a democrat congress man for Georgia's 5th congressional district for over 3 decades.  In 1965 aged 25 he helped organise and led a march for voting rights on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. In 2011 he was awarded the highest civilian honour "the Presidential Medal of Freedom" by President Obama, the first African American president.
