The Minister for Petroleum Resources Mrs Diezani Alison- Madueke announced yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland that restoration of the oil devastated Ogoniland will start in January next year. The United Nations Environmental Programme report in 2010 recommended that $1 Billion be spent on cleaning up the devastated Ogoniland. The minister went further to say that the restoration may take up to 15 years to complete.
According to the UNEP report they found that 50 years of oil spillage and flaring, the once alluvial soil of the Niger Delta is no longer viable for agriculture use. Also ground water has been contaminated with benzene and carcinogen at 900 levels above WHO guidelines. UNEP recommended it may take more that 30 years to rehabilitate Ogoniland.
