Alabama: Man released after 30 years in death row

Anthony Ray Hinton

A man who has been on Alabama's death row for nearly 30 years for a murder he didn't commit has been freed. Anthony Ray Hinton, 58 was convicted of murder in 1985 for the deaths of 2 restaurant managers John Davidson and Thomas and Thomas Vason. He has always maintained his innocence. And that the gun found in his house was not used in the muder. 12 years ago revolver experts testified that the revolver Hinton was said to have used to commit the crime could not be matched  to evidence in either case and that the 2 killings could not be linked to him.  A new trial was ordered in 2014 which exonerated him. When Hinton was released he took in the sunshine and thanked God and his legal team. He said "All they had to do was to test the gun, but when you think you're high and mighty and you're above the law, you don't have to answer to nobody," Hinton told reporters.
"But I've got news for you -- everybody that played a part in sending me to death row, you will answer to God."
Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Laura Petro had ordered Hinton released after granting the state's motion to dismiss charges against him.
